Bible Study: Genesis 11

If you are interested in the Tower of Babel, then you should check out Stairway to Heaven. I think Genesis 11 shows a different side of God. More compassionate than the God who called down a flood. I don’t think God was actually afraid of being overthrown by humans, but He probably noticed that they were on the same downhill slope as before the flood. Though they were blatantly disobeying His command to fill the earth, He had promised not to destroy them all again so instead He points them in a different direction.
It is very obvious the reason for the author’s focus in this genealogy. Shem’s line is the one you will be following for the rest of the Bible, culminating in the birth of Christ. He is the founder of the Jewish race, which is why something anti-Jewish is anti-semitic. He also focuses on Terah, because his son is kind of important. You may have heard of Abram or Abraham as he is later known?
It is neat to see the gradual decline in age of the descendants. Sometimes it is not that gradual. I am sure that Peleg thought he had a good 200 years left in him.
