Bible Study: Genesis 12

The Digital BibleThese first three verses of Genesis 12…kind of a big deal. The Abrahamic covenant, which was made without conditions to Abram, can be seen throughout the rest of the Bible and even with modern day Israel. There are three promises which are land, offspring and blessings. Though this is commonly called the Abrahamic covenant, it is technically the Abramic covenant, since God hasn’t changed his name yet. I imagine it was difficult to explain to Lot and Sarai why they were just up and leaving the place he had lived for 75 years.

Abram might show faith by packing up and leaving his home, but he doesn’t seem to have the same faith in God regarding his own death. God promised to make a great nation of him yet for some reason he is afraid of being murdered in Egypt. Not that I blame him.

Abram was 75 yet his 65 year-old wife was apparently gorgeous enough to attract the attention of the Pharoah. I sort of admire Sarai for allowing her husband to take advantage of her and potentially put her in danger. We also see more evidence that God was going to fulfill his promise to Abram regardless of Abram’s actions. He even sends down a plague. I wonder if God spoke to the Pharoah telling him the cause of the plague or if he just understood that the plague was because of Abram.
