Bible Study: Genesis 13

The Digital BibleI always stereotype Abram as some desert nomad, but he was actually much more than that. As it says in Genesis 13, he was very rich and later on I think his men even defeat a king’s army. So he was actually a very well-off business man and lived very comfortably.

I am not really sure what it means when it says Abram called upon the name of the Lord. My guess is that as he comes to this place he asks God to bless it and for His presence to be there. Perhaps he was asking for confirmation that this is the place that God commanded him to go to. It seems that Abram had quite the direct connection to God, which I’m sure was necessary if he was to be the founder of God’s chosen people.

Abram makes the hard, yet correct decision here when he separates from Lot. You should take note that Lot chooses to go east, since going east in the Bible generally is going against God’s will. Although some people like to shame Lot for taking the seemingly better land, it would seem the obvious decision. There could have been other reasons he took it (like desiring to become allies of the people there), but the text doesn’t specifically tell us that.
